New guy from Maine

Hi from Maine.

Thought I'd check this site out. Been going to Bike Week since 93. Started on an old 73 Ironhead Sporty, moved up to a Softail Heritage, customized to look like a Street Glide, but it was done in 94 by the previous owner/builder. Last year traded it for a geezer glide (Road Glide) with all the comforts of home.

Thought since I became gainfully unemployed (retired) I should act my age so I decided to skip Laconia for Americade in Lake George. What a dumb a-- move that was. OK the riding over there includes some nice roads, but they spent more time sitting around in seminars and waiting in line for this and that than actually riding. Looks like I'm not as old as I thought.

Well, long story short, I'm back. I won't miss another Bike week as long as I can throw a leg over! I do like a little peace and quiet at night so I found North Conway to be a perfect base for me. Only an hour's ride to Weirs and lots of roads to explore.

Anyone here from Maine? I live in Augusta and like to ride just about anywhere, rain or shine.

Re: New guy from Maine

Thanks for the welcomes everyone.

I've never been to Sturgis, but my neighbor and riding buddy went last year and he can't wait to go again. I have been to Daytona twice when my parents lived in Florida and enjoyed the riding there once you got inland and north, up around Ocala.

Got the Rally News last week and now I'm really excited. Next month we're going to No. Conway to check out another place to stay, right in town although we did like having the tent set up at the Grand Hotel last year with all the rain.

Yeah, Americade was "interesting", never seen so many motorcyclists (they don't liked to be called bikers) bitching about loud pipes. Bunch of whiny old ladies, my apologies to all the grannies out there. Then there were the state troopers stopping motorcycles only at a rest stop on the interstate to check registration, inspection and helmets. It seemed like everyone in the state was out to separate the bikers from every penny they had, a completely different attitude from that in New Hampshire. Don't even get me started on the restaurants and motels over there, can you say stuck in the fifties, and not in a good way! I do love good restaurants and there are plenty around New Hampshire.

Gives me a new appreciation of the attitude of just about everyone from the Governor on down in New Hampshire. Heck, New York is even worse than Maine, at least we don't have a lid law, any more.

That's my rant for today, just a cranky old geezer letting off steam.

When we heard about the motorcycles only checkpoints last year, we were  I sent an email protesting it to Gov. Paterson, fat lot of good that does. I did hear that Americade 'rally' will not be held this year.

do you go to the UBM weekend? we have friends that go and say it is a great time.

I sent a letter as well, the only good news is that Patterson is the second New York governor in a row to go down in disgrace.

Americade is going on this year, I have the registration form on my desk. What happened is that Bill Dutcher threatened to move it out of Lake George and possibly New York state due to the ever increasing fees for the use of the public properties. It seems that A-cade pays more in fees than the other groups that use the beach area and the expo building. Several people mentioned moving it to Vermont, possibly Killington. I hear that they put on a rally there Labor Day weekend, I'd like to check that out some time.

Went to the UBM weekend once and it was quite a good party. Games, adult beverages, food and just plain old fashioned biker fun. A great bunch of people. Nice ride up, lots of fun, camping and partying, but that shower and real bed felt great when I got home. My lady doesn't camp out any more and I do prefer the comforts when I'm on the road so we look for a good motel, Inn or B&B.

Welcome Mainah. My grandfather was from Sanford. We had a house in Wells Beach where I spent all my summers growing up. We have a bar meet the last Friday of bike week usually at the Looney Bin. Hope to see you there.

Thanks, we'll try to make it. My (MUCH) better half will be with me. We don't usually drink when on the bike, but might have one then walk it off across the street.
